The Theater Offensive (TTO)’s annual fundraiser, Beyond the Stage, is returning this year in an all-new format! This year, we are celebrating both our True Colors and Queer Family Series programming and moving to a daytime event to allow youth and families to attend!
For over 30 years, Beyond the Stage has been TTO’s premier benefit for True Colors: Out Youth Theater— our award-winning out-of-school program that uses a proven community-based theater approach to train and activate LGBTQ+ youth leaders ages 13-19. This year, proceeds will help support a range of programming for LGBTQ+ youth, families, and elders.
The event will be held on October 22nd at District Hall and virtually on Zoom from 12pm to 2:30pm.
Founded in 1994, True Colors is the longest-running LGBTQ youth theater program in the country. True Colors uses a proven community-engaged theater model to train LGBTQ and allied youth leaders in writing and performance skills. The majority of True Colors youth are 14-22 from Boston neighborhoods. True Colors transforms real-life stories of queer youth into powerful performances and workshops, based on their lived experiences of topics such as bullying, homelessness, coming out, and discrimination. By touring to local schools and community groups, these performances combat bigotry, hate, and discrimination. True Colors is a safe space for all youth, where they can explore their identities and build key creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and problem-solving skills. True Colors provides direct service to 100 youth annually and reaches an average of 3,000 audience members each year.
Queer Family Series (QFS) offers produced and presented work centered on exploring all facets of queerness from as early as our first memories to our last. This program will focus on social education & awareness through transmedia productions and intergenerational community engagement– connecting queer families and elders with accessible art that captures the rigidness of heteronormativity and imagines a world where people can present as they wish, where dress up is real. We wish to uplift the core value and belief that theater is an essential fabric and texture in how we communicate with each other, as well as how we communicate our creativity and desires.
